However, the event did prove the value of academic dress on formal occasions. The pillars in the museum crypt, a former workshop now reopened as the museum cafe, had been cleaned but not sealed, and deposited a coating of fine white dust on anyone brushing against them. The gown-wearers were left looking even more pleased with themselves than usual.
