The Royal Institution is old and venerable and prides itself on its old and venerable superlatives, such as the fact that its annual Christmas lectures are 166 years old this year. Director Peter Day was also hoping to boast that its lectures have been the longest running children's series on the BBC, having been broadcast for 25 years. But there is a series which beats the RI hollow. Blue Peter has been running for 37 years.
