* Brighton Univer-sity has appointed Yvonne Hillier , co-ordinator of the London and South East Region Learning and Skills Network, professor of education. Professorships have also gone to Graham Beaver , in strategic management; Andrew Cundy , in applied geochemistry; Gina Wisker , in higher education and contemporary literature; Flis Henwood, in social informatics; David Stephens , in international education; Angie Hart, in child, family and community health; Avril Loveless , in education; Vyv Evans, in cognitive linguistics; Tara Brabazon, in media studies; Marian Barnes , in social policy; and Jo Doust , exercise physiology.

* Oxford University has appointed: Denis Feeney , currently Giger professor of Latin at Princeton University, professor of the Latin language and literature and a fellow of Corpus Christi College; and Heather Bell , formerly a partner at McKinsey and Company in Toronto and London, director of international strategy. The university has also announced the following appointments for 2007-08: James Forder , Balliol College, senior proctor; Marcus Banks , Wolfson College, junior proctor; and Paul Coones , Hertford College, assessor.
