Lane Hughston, former director of derivative product risk management at Merrill Lynch, London, has been appointed the first professor of financial mathematics at King's College, London. Two other appointments in the field will be made soon. The team will be supported by existing academic staff in the college's department of mathematics and will offer a new MSc in financial mathematics, short courses for workers in the financial services industry and a PhD in financial mathematics.

Maire Smith, group commercial director at Medical Marketing International, has been appointed chief executive officer of Manchester Biotech Limited, an independent company that aims to build start-up bioscience-based businesses.

Petra Wend, director of curriculum, learning and quality in the school of humanities and cultural studies at Middlesex University, has been appointed dean of humanities and teacher education at the University of North London. She succeeds Greg Condry, who is leaving to take up a post as a regional director at the Open University.

Neil Gershon, secretary of the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, London, has been appointed registrar and secretary at the University of Sussex.

George Odham, former principal lecturer in music at Bath Spa University College, has been appointed the Guildhall School of Music and Drama's first research fellow in the new research centre for teaching and learning.
