The University of Manchester has appointed Rodger Pannone, former president of the Law Society, deputy chairman of council from September 1999 to July 2000, after which he will become chairman.

Tony Butterworth, dean of nursing, has been appointed pro vice-chancellor.

Other university appointments include: Paul O'Brien, Sumitomo professor of materials chemistry at Imperial College, who becomes professor of inorganic materials chemistry from September; Stephen Oliver, professor of biotechnology at UMIST, appointed professor of genomics in the school of biological sciences from October; David Eisner, professor of veterinary biology at the University of Liverpool, professor of cardiac physiology from October; Richard Bentall, professor of clinical psychology at the University of Liverpool, professor of experimental clinical psychology from August; Clive Agnew, senior lecturer in geography at University College London, professor of physical geography from November; and Beverley Skeggs, reader in

sociology and women's studies

at the University of Lancaster,

professor of sociology from

September.

Anne White, reader in medicine and cell biology at the University of Manchester, became professor of endocrine sciences in the medical school and school of biological sciences in July.
