The Institute of Education has made a string of high-profile appointments.

Mary Stiasny has been appointed assistant director of learning and teaching. She was previously director of education and training at the British Council.

Ann Phoenix has been appointed co- director of the Thomas Coram Research Unit. She was previously professor of social and developmental psychology at the Open University.

John McDonald joins from Southampton University, where he was professor of social statistics, as professor of longitudinal social statistics in the faculty of policy and society.

David Scott will become chair of education in the faculty of culture and pedagogy. He was previously acting dean of teaching and learning and professor of educational leadership and learning at Lincoln University.

Anna Sfard has been appointed to a chair in mathematical education in the faculty of culture and pedagogy. She joins from Michigan State University. Richard Wiggins joins from City University as professor in quantitative social sciences in the faculty of policy and society.

Peter Donnelly , professor of statistical science in Oxford University's department of statistics, has been appointed director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at Oxford University.
