The mood among higher education types at the Conservative Party conference this week was gloomy, to say the least. They were surveying booked rooms and pre-ordered jugs of coffee and sandwiches with something akin to panic, as the realisation dawned that the meetings featuring the big leadership candidates would be the only real parties in town.
