Brussels, 26 Sep 2006

Three names have been proposed for the category of best research and technology MEP for the MEP Awards 2006. The MEPs nominated are Jerzy Buzek (EPP-ED, Poland), Pia Locatelli (PES, Italy) and Catherine Trautmann (PES, France).

The Parliament Magazine, the Brussels-based publication running the awards, states that Mr Buzek has been influential in developing clean coal technology, and has 'shown strong commitment to ensuring that the views of Europe's universities are heard'.

On Ms Locatelli, the magazine writes of her 2005 report entitled 'Guidelines for future European policy to support research', which called for an increase in EU research funding, continuity between the Sixth and Seventh Framework Programmes, and synchronisation of framework programmes with the EU's financial perspectives.

Ms Trautmann's commitment to making information technology and communication tools available for all are also mentioned - her report on this subject was adopted by the Parliament in June 2005.

The winner of the award will be announced at a ceremony on 10 October.
