There is nothing like first-hand experience for informing high-level research. Hence the decision by Michael Denham, 92, a consultant and lecturer at Northwick Park Hospital, to take time out for a PhD. He has been given a sabbatical to research "the history of old age", with a deadline for submission of 2003.
