Nicaraguan student demonstrations

(Photograph) - Firing line: Nicaraguan students aim home-made mortars during violent demonstrations over cuts in university funding and higher fees. Trouble erupted once more despite efforts to defuse the crisis through negotiations.

Student fees will rise if the cuts are imposed. President Arnoldo Aleman has warned of more drastic action if demonstrations continue. At least 23 people have been injured in more than two weeks of demonstrations, according to the International Red Cross. Police using tear gas and live ammunition have breached the constitutionally guaranteed autonomy of the universities by clearing at least one campus of students.
