Superior Cheltenham now boasts the country's newest university, the University of Gloucestershire.
The Royal Automobile Club immediately put up roadsigns reflecting the name change. However, the former Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education's campuses and website continue to welcome visitors to the old college.
The name change is good news for environmental guru Sir John Houghton (pictured below), higher education expert Lord Dearing and Patricia Puttnam, patron of the institution's arts festival. They had been due to accept honorary doctorates and an honorary degree from the college next week. Now the kudos of the qualification has been boosted.
