The dons of Balliol College, Oxford will be quaking in their books as the figure of alumnas to be proud of No 86, Nicola Horlick, fills the front pages of every national newpaper.

First, on Pounds 1 million a year, she has broken the fundamental rule that her former college teaches its graduates - to despise those making the kind of money they never will.

Next, storming the offices of Morgan Grenfell Asset Management to demand back her job before flying off to Frankfurt - journalists and spin doctors in tow - is a little ostentatious.

And as for having five children ... effortless superiority just isn't what it was.
