A Russian court has ruled that a brick factory that quarried sand from the site of a medieval town must pay more than five million roubles (Pounds 130,000) in damages. Vladimir Yenukov, head of Kursk's archaeological expedition, which has been excavating at the site of the town of Lipovechsk, said the sum awarded against the factory was likely to be reduced on appeal but would fund future digs.
