The 1996 award for subliminally reinforcing confidence in the examination system goes to the central schedulers at ITV. On the night before this year's A-level results were released, with hopeful candidates doubtless already contemplating sleepless nights, they might have shown any of episodes of Inspector Morse. So which one do they chose ? The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn, set in an examinations board where two members of the syndicate combine to bump off two others amid an atmosphere thick with adultery and corruption.
