Lords asked to approve new loans rules

February 19, 1999

Peers were set for another debate on student funding this week as the House of Lords was asked to approve the new loans regulations.

Lords met yesterday to debate the Education (Student Support) Regulations 1999. The regulations govern access to the cost and repayment of the increased loans, which will be available from this autumn when maintenance grants will be abolished.

The regulations follow the controversial Teaching and Higher Education Act that peers tried to halt last year. Peers also debated the Education (Student Loans) (Scotland) Regulations 1999.
