Leeds University is opening a research and postgraduate institute dedicated to lifelong learning today.
Director Phil Hodkinson said that after completing their formal education most adults earned no recognition for their subsequent learning.
He said: "Lifelong learning is a fashionable idea, but we need to find out more about how it occurs, in what ways it can be beneficial and to whom, and what can be done to promote, enhance and extend it."
