Germ wars warning sounded
Future wars could be fought with microbes rather than bombs and missiles, Sir William Stewart, president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, warned today in his presidential address to this year’s BA Festival of Science at Glasgow University.

Chocolate developed for longer life
Chocolate enriched with healthy chemicals called flavonoids acts like aspirin to protect the heart, the British Association for the Advancement of Science festival heard today. Researchers at the University of California at Davis conducted an experiment that showed how eating this type of chocolate can help prevent blood clots.

Library book returned after 24 years
A student with a guilty conscience has returned an overdue library book 24 years late. Staff at South Thames College in London were amazed when the book - Peasant Wars of the Twentieth Century , by Eric R. Wolf - arrived in a package with an Algerian postmark. Former student Mohamed Bokreta blamed his tardiness on “juvenile and youthful wicked whims”.
