Student rents rising fast
Student accommodation charges are rising much faster than the rate of inflation, according to a new survey from the National Union of Students. The study found that average weekly rents in halls of residence rose 4.75 per cent in the last academic year, while self-catering room rates rose 8.2 per cent.
 
Scots invest £5.4 million in science spin-offs
Wendy Alexander, Scotland’s minister for enterprise and lifelong learning, has announced £5.4 million “proof of concept” awards for 36 leading-edge academic research projects. The awards fund the development gap between a scientific discovery and a prototype.

Dixons funds university chair
The electrical goods chain Dixons has funded a new chair of entrepreneurship and innovation at Edinburgh University. John Clare, chief executive of Dixons Group plc, said the chair would help business and the wider community take full advantage of opportunities springing from new technology.
