Wales faces more cuts
Welsh universities and higher education colleges face further funding cuts. Figures published today by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales show teaching allocations for 2001-02 leave Welsh institutions overall facing a 0.5 per cent "efficiency gain".
Apprenticeships gain £180m
The government is ploughing £180 million more into modern apprenticeships to provide up to 80,000 extra training places for young people by 2003-04. The money will be spread over three years and will take the total spending on work-based learning for young people to £2.46 billion.
Cannabis's effects on brain investigated
Scientists at Dundee and Aberdeen universities have begun a three-year investigation into the effects of cannabis on the brain. The research is backed by £241,000 from the Medical Research Council.
