Sainsbury urges diversity of mission
Universities need a greater diversity of mission, science minister Lord Sainsbury told the International Universities Presidents Forum today. “We want some to concentrate on being world-class at research and some to concentrate on being world-class at knowledge transfer,” he said.

Lib Dems reaffirm fee promise
The Liberal Democrats have reaffirmed their pledge to abolish tuition fees. Activists at the party’s weekend conference in Torquay were told that a penny on income tax would raise sufficient money to cover the cost.

Exeter welcomes £15m donation
Exeter University has received a £15 million anonymous donation for its school of business and ethics. It will spend the money on developing a postgraduate teaching centre in finance and investment studies.
