Cost of dropouts £200 million and rising
University dropouts are costing the taxpayer an estimated £200 million a year. Mantz Yorke, professor of education at Liverpool John Moores University, told the House of Commons education select committee that the cost could rise as universities try to meet widening participation targets.

Grandfather of modernism dies
Sir Denys Lasdun, the architect who designed the University of East Anglia and the Royal College of Physicians, has died aged 86. Once dubbed the grandfather of modernism, he was regarded as one of the greatest architects of the 20th century, most famous for his design of the National Theatre on London's South Bank.
