Open University closes US operation
The United States Open University is being shut after failing to recruit enough students. It will close at the end of June. OU staff seconded to the USOU will return to the university. Existing students are being notified. Vice-chancellor Brenda Gourley said: "While this eventuality is a setback to our original plans for work in the US, we will continue to consider appropriate forms of operation as the market conditions improve."

Two charities merge as Cancer Research UK
Cancer Research UK was launched today as the merger between the country's two largest cancer charities was made official. The new organisation outlined five key initiatives that included a multi-million pound collaboration with universities, government and voluntary sector bodies to provide centres of excellence in Cambridge, Newcastle, Glasgow and Oxford.
