Turkish student 'at risk of torture'
Emrullah Karagoz, a pro-Kurdish Turkish student, held incommunicado in police custody since November 1 despite a judge’s order for his transfer to prison, is at risk of torture and ill-treatment, according to Amnesty International. He is a member of the legal pro-Kurdish political party HADEP but is charged with "aiding and abetting an illegal organisation".
Rough ride for AUT candidate
The Association of University Teachers’ official candidate for the general secretary’s post, to be confirmed next week, is likely to be opposed by at least two candidates nominated by the AUT grassroots. Durham University philosopher and AUT executive member Martin Hughes, and John Duffy, a former member of the AUT executive from Birmingham University, will stand against the official candidate in a ballot in December. There are two candidates for the post of official candidate, to be decided on Wednesday.
Hodges pledges to boost Erasmus
Higher education minister Margaret Hodge has pledged her support to a Socrates Erasmus Council initiative to encourage more British students to study abroad. Twice as many Erasmus students come to the UK as UK students go abroad.
A brush with the masters
Art lovers are getting the chance to spot a potential masterpiece at the Royal College of Art’s Secret Exhibition, which opens today. The annual event features anonymous work from a wide range of artists, some of them world-famous. The postcard-sized pieces of art cost £35 each. The identities of the artists will be revealed when the works are sold on November 29.
