Russians jail American scholar
An American Fulbright scholar who denied selling marijuana while a postgraduate researcher at Russia's Voronezh State University has been sentenced to three years in prison.  John E. Tobin was said by prosecutors to be carrying a matchbox that contained marijuana when he left a nightclub on January 26.

Campus party ends in riot
Police said a night of fires and street violence near the campus of the University of Northern Colorado stemmed from a party that had got out of hand. Officers were pelted with rocks, bottles and pieces of concrete but only two minor injuries were reported and no arrests were made.
