Norway may set up 14 new institutions
Norwegian minister of education and research Trond Griske has tabled a bill to set up 14 new universities and university colleges, bringing the total to 18.

Israeli troops yesterday opened fire on Palestinians attempting to use a bulldozer to break though barriers blocking the road between Ramallah and the university campus of Bir Zeit, killing one man and injuring many others.

Ukraine protest goes on
Ukrainian students are to continue protests against president Leonid Kuchma, whom some have implicated in the murder of a whistleblowing journalist. Students plan strikes in Kiev and Lviv, despite their failure on Friday to prevent Kuchma laying flowers at the statue of Ukraine's national poet, Taras Shevchenko. About 200 demonstrators were arrested.
