Jobs fillip for Aberdeen

May 26, 2000

Aberdeen University is hoping to create between 50 and 60 jobs with Pounds 5 million in research funding from the European Union.

The university has boosted its cache of EU grants by 50 per cent for projects involving medicine, biological, physical and social sciences, and industrial partnerships.

Alex Forrester, vice-principal with responsibility for European funding, said: "I am confident that we can expect a further Pounds 2 million of funding, bringing our funding to Pounds 7 million by the end of the year. This will in fact mean some 80 jobs being created. If you take into account the multiplier effect of such increased employment opportunities, then the economic benefits to the city are even greater."
