There was an unexpectedly candid reaction from Tory campaign HQ to The Times Higher 's poll of students' voting intentions.

The poll reveals that although the Tories languish in third place for the undergraduate vote, students say Michael Howard has the best policies on law and order.

One aide told The Times Higher : "These student types are always complaining about being beaten up by pikeys. I should bloody well think they are in favour of our law and order policies. Oh, that was off the record." Are you thinking what we're thinking?
