As Friday night passed into Saturday morning last weekend, the union reps and employers still conscious after more than 28 hours of deliberations around the pay negotiating tables were alert enough to spot the irony of a breakthrough in the talks. Holed up in a hotel, having not seen their children or spouses since Thursday morning, the group struck a deal on improving the work-life balance of university staff.
