Ispra (IT): On 1 March 2002 the European Space Agency successfully launched the ENVISAT satellite using an Ariane 5 launch vehicle. The ENVISAT mission will provide unique measurements specifically targeted to global oceanography, ocean-atmosphere interactions, atmospheric chemistry and vegetation monitoring.

IES staff has been involved in the MERIS Scientific Advisory Group of ESA for the past 12 years and has developed and implemented the only algorithms for land surface processes that are included in the operational ground segment at ESRIN in Frascati.

The Inland and Marine Waters unit of IES will contribute to the validation and application of ENVISAT data products in the European area with particular emphasis on the study of coastal processes and monitoring of the marine ecosystem.
