Hymns and healing

St Andrews University theologian Ian Bradley appeared yesterday on a US Thanksgiving Day television broadcast explaining the role of hymns in helping people in the aftermath of the World Trade Center terrorist atrocity. Hymns such as Amazing Grace and Blessed Assurance were sung at the Ground Zero site by rescue workers in commemoration services. Dr Bradley, senior lecturer in practical theology, said: "Often we can sing things that we can't express well in words without music."
