January 18, 2005

Brussels, 17 Jan 2005

As new FAO/WHO recommendations based on energy expenditure suggest industrialised countries have been systematically overfeeding young children for the last 20 years, an international symposium on 'how much food do we really need?' will take place in London, the UK, on 4 February.

Topics covered will include:
- new approaches to assessing the world's malnourished;
- implications of the new standards for growth and food needs for babies and children;
- WHO: the new perspective on the energy needs of babies, infants and children;
- developing FAO's estimates of the world's hungry: new concepts of needs for food energy;
- food quality not quantity?;
- assessing human energy requirements;
- is physical activity important for health?;
- food quality in relation to energy balance.
