High-flying spy

Alumnus to be proud of No 145 represents one of the most distinguished traditions of Cambridge University: spying. Not that there is any suggestion that Richard Tomlinson, charged this week under the 1989 Official Secrets Act for planning to publish a book on his experiences in MI6, ever handed secrets over to an unfriendly power. Perhaps if he had he could have counted on the indulgence extended by the establishment, including the House of Windsor, to Anthony Blunt. But what Mr Tomlinson has in common with Burgess, Maclean and others is that he graduated from Cambridge, with a first-class degree in aeronautical engineering.
