In a new paper on GM foods, Sir Robert May, the government's chief scientific adviser, said: "I have confidence in our precautions relating to food safety, some doubts about how completely we understand the problem of 'escaping genes' I and real concern about how this technology could accelerate adverse changes in the countryside." He said that if GM foods were used wisely, they could improve quality of life.
