Glasgow students vote to kick out Kemp

October 20, 2000

Ross Kemp, the student-elected rector of Glasgow University, has been asked to resign because he did not give a freshers' week address for the second year running.

Questioning his commitment to the post, students passed a no-confidence vote in the former EastEnders star. Mr Kemp has blamed his non-appearance on London traffic jams, which made him miss his flight from Heathrow Airport.

Marilyn Croser, president of Glasgow's Students Representative Council, said the students' motion instructed her to seek Mr Kemp's resignation. Mr Kemp had not exercised his right to chair the university court, but he had attended seven of 11 court meetings, she said. "He has to return to London the same day, so he is not seen on campus. That has been one of the problems," she said.
