Students stranded as travel firm fails
A student travel company collapsed this week amid allegations of serious financial mismanagement, leaving nearly 2,000 young people stranded in remote parts of the world. Receivers were appointed yesterday at Usit Campus, the second-biggest student travel company in Britain, and Usit Ltd, its Irish sister company. (Times)

Nuclear family falls below three quarters
The proportion of families headed by two parents has fallen below 75 per cent, official figures show. Two-parent families made up only 74 per cent of all households with dependent children in 2001, down from 92 per cent in 1971, according to figures published today by the Office for National Statistics. New Elizabethans mark Queen's 50 years
A list of "new Elizabethans" was published yesterday, highlighting writers, artists, actors, politicians, pop stars and scientists who have "flourished" during the Queen's 50-year reign. According to the list compiled by the British Airways High Life magazine, David Bowie was favoured over Mick Jagger, Kingsley Amis preferred as a novelist to his son Martin, and Spike Milligan was just beaten by Peter Cook.
