Brussels, 04 Jun 2004

Interest among technology companies in the 2004 European Information Society Technologies (IST) Prize appears as high as ever, following the announcement by the organisers that 430 candidates from 29 countries will compete for this year's honours.

For the 2003 IST Prize, 420 companies took part in the event, while in 2002 a record 437 participants competed for Europe's most distinguished award for innovative IST products. This year's level of participation, therefore, confirms the consistently high regard in which the IST Prize is held.

France and The Netherlands are the best represented countries in this year's field, followed by Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK. Participants will now have to wait until September before the Commission announces the 70 European IST Prize nominees, and among them the 20 winners.

The 20 selected winners will exhibit their innovative products during the 2004 IST Event in The Hague, Netherlands, from 15 to 17 November, where three Grand Prize winners will be selected, each receiving 200,000 euro and the IST Prize trophy.
