John Barrow of Cambridge University, lecturing the Royal Astronomical Society on cosmology last week, pointed out that vast expanses of space and time impress most people - but cut little ice with the consumer-protection types.
He produced as evidence a label from a packet of salt that announced: "This salt is over 200 million years old and was created by geological processes within the mountains of Germany. Best before April 2003."
