The Higher Education Statistics Agency's findings for 1995/1996 reveal that:

Of overseas domiciled students at UK higher education institutions:

* 48.4 per cent are European

* 30.2 per cent are Asian

* 7.3 per cent are African

* 7 per cent are North American

* 4.5 per cent are Middle Eastern

* 1.5 per cent are South American

* 1 per cent are Australasian
