The Higher Education Statistics Agency's findings for 1995/96 reveal that: of the 20 per cent of first-degree graduates who went on to further study:

* 55 per cent of women went on to study for postgraduate diplomas (including PGCEs), compared with 36 per cent of men

* 18 per cent of men went on to study for a higher degree by research, compared with only 10 per cent of women
