Evaluation of the R&D needs of business-related service enterprises

June 25, 2004

Brussels, 24 Jun 2004

The European Commission's Enterprise DG has published a call for tenders relating to an evaluation of the research and development (R&D) needs of business-related service enterprises.

The role of services in the economy and their potential for growth and employment creation was highlighted at the Lisbon European Council in March 2000. A key part of the economic reform programme adopted by the Council is to make the internal market work for services.

The communication on 'The competitiveness of business-related services and their contribution to the performance of European enterprises' (COM (2003) 747) is closely linked and complementary to the legislative and non-legislative measures in the draft directive on services in the internal market. It outlines other measures aimed at improving the competitiveness of European enterprises, such as better statistics, reporting on intangibles, training and information and communication technology (ICT) skills, innovation and R&D.

The main tasks of the service provider will be to conduct a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the research and development activities of service providers in Europe; to assess the work undertaken by them in national and EU research and innovation programmes; and to identify promising areas for future research activities.
