Critics of dome secretary Peter Mandelson's handling of the Greenwich project will be praying Tony Blair's threatened reshuffle really does mean Mandy getting booted upstairs to take over as culture secretary. Mandy is the government's "shareholder" in the New Millennium Experience Company, the firm set up by the government to build the dome.

But as culture secretary, Mr Mandelson would become chairman of the Millennium Commission, which decides how millennium money should be spent. A department of culture spokesman confirmed that holding both positions could amount to a potential conflict of interest. Mandy would have to hand over his share in the dome to a junior minister, to a huge sigh of relief all round.
