The Quality Assurance Agency may not have realised the opposition it would meet when it proposed abolishing the distinctive MA title for Scottish undergraduate degrees. According to the papal bull giving Glasgow University the right to confer degrees: "Let none therefore in any wise infringe this writing of our constitutions and appointment, or with foolhardy daring go in the contrary thereof, but if anyone shall presume to attempt this, let them know that he will incur the wrath of Almighty God, and of the blessed apostles Peter and Paul."
