This close-up of a drain-dwelling moth fly was among the 16 winners of the Wellcome Image Awards 2012, presented on 20 June.

Kevin Mackenzie, microscopy and cellular imaging manager at the University of Aberdeen, used a scanning electron microscope to create the false-colour image of the 5mm-long insect.

The images, chosen for their scientific merit and aesthetic appeal, will be displayed in London's Wellcome Collection until December.
