Derby merger with colleges under consideration

THE FIRST merger involving general further education colleges and a university has been cleared for consultation by the Further Education Funding Council. The planned merger of High Peak College and Mackworth College with Derby University could occur on August 1, 1998. The new institution would have 19,000 further education and 12,000 higher education students. Following consultation, the matter will go to education secretary David Blunkett for consideration.
