Even people who live alongside a university may, it seems, sometimes have little idea of what goes on there.

Managers at one new university were baffled recently by a call from a local resident complaining about noise from a student party. On being told there was little that could be done to make the students pipe down, the caller replied: "Can't you tell them off at assembly?"
