Senior lecturer in psychiatrySt George's Hospital Medical SchoolLondon It is interesting to juxtapose Raymond Tallis's attack on psychoanalysis from the viewpoint of proper science with the authoritative words from psychiatrists and others in the national press this week about possible causes and motivations of multiple murderer Dr Harold Shipman. Unless I am very much mistaken the explanations put forward are couched in the concepts of Freud, Klein and Lacan.
