CORDIS publishes searchable expressions of interest for sustainable energy systems

CORDIS, the Community Research and Development Information Service, has published over 300 expressions of interest (EoI), submitted by European citizens and research stakeholders, relating to the sustainable energy systems work programme under the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).

The Commission invited expressions of interest in the field of 'sustainable energy systems - medium to long term' between 26 November 2003 and 19 March 2004. The aim was to provide an opportunity for researchers and other interested parties to come forward with ideas that could be included in future revisions of the work programme.

CORDIS has developed a dedicated service for the expressions of interest, including a facility to browse submissions by the activity areas of the sustainable energy systems work programme (fuel cells and applications, CO2 capture and sequestration, etc). There is also a free text search option that searches the title, acronym, and all the non-confidential text from the EoI, including rationale, objectives, approach, relevance, scale of ambition, and contribution to the European Research Area (ERA).

EoIs for topics that could be the subject of future calls for proposals were submitted by organisations or groups of organisations intending to form consortia to participate in research actions. The more than 300 EoIs published from the Member States, associated candidate countries and other associated states provide a valuable resource for developing contacts and collaborations on topics of mutual interest in FP6.

The Commission will take account of the outcome of the EoI exercise - along with advice received through wider consultations with stakeholders, the advisory group for energy and the programme committee - when drawing up its proposals for topics to be included in future calls for proposals. The aim is to focus calls on high priority topics and so avoid over-subscription. The revised work programme will be published in September 2004.

The new EoI database is fully integrated into the broader sustainable development web service on CORDIS, which offers news and access to partners, documents and other practical information necessary for FP6 project proposals in the area of 'Sustainable development, global change and ecosystems.' A report providing an analysis of the EoIs is also published on the new service.
