The Council adopted a Decision authorising the Commission to negotiate an agreement between the European Atomic Energy Community and Japan for cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy (6264/06 and 6256/06).

Under the agreement, the contracting parties will cooperate to promote and facilitate nuclear trade, research and development between or in Japan and the Community for peaceful and non-explosive uses of nuclear energy, in the mutual interests of producers, the nuclear fuel cycle industry, utilities, research and development institutes and consumers, while abiding by the principles of nonproliferation.
