Chile's collegiate team

Any academic who does not fancy Scotland or England in the World Cup but wants a team to follow could do worse than Chile. Not only are they good enough to beat England at Wembley and still available at generous odds, but they have 12 players in their squad from university clubs - the Universidad Catolica and Universidad de Chile teams. The rival clubs are fully professional, but retain through their supporters much of the coloration of the institutions - if you are middle-class and left-wing in Santiago, the odds are you back Universidad de Chile, while right-wingers lean towards Universidad Catolica.
