It may normally take Scottish students a year longer than their English counterparts to graduate, but Aberdeen University has just been contacted by the Guinness Book of Records about an 18th-century fast-tracker, apparently in line for youngest ever professor. Colin Maclaurin (1698-1746) was elected to the chair of mathematics in Aberdeen's Marischal College at the age of 19.
